« Back to Glossary Index
Kerning is the process of adjusting the space between individual characters in a piece of text to achieve visually pleasing and balanced typography. Unlike tracking, which uniformly changes spacing across a range of characters, kerning focuses on the spacing between specific letter pairs to improve legibility and aesthetic harmony.
For example, in the word "AVATAR", the letters "A" and "V" may appear too far apart by default, so kerning would reduce the space between them to create a more cohesive look.
Good kerning is essential in professional design, especially in logos, headlines, and branding, where typography plays a critical visual role.
