Definition of "Navigation" by Graphic Design Newcastle:

In design—particularly in web and user interface (UI) design—navigation refers to the system or method by which users move through and interact with a digital product, such as a website, app, or software interface. It encompasses the menus, links, buttons, and other UI elements that guide users to different sections or content areas.

Effective navigation is intuitive, consistent, and user-friendly, helping users find information quickly and complete tasks efficiently. Common types of navigation include:

  • Top (or horizontal) navigation – typically found at the top of a webpage.
  • Side (or vertical) navigation – often used in dashboards or complex applications.
  • Hamburger menus – collapsible menus commonly used in mobile interfaces.
  • Breadcrumbs – show users their current location within a site’s hierarchy.
  • Footer navigation – links placed at the bottom of a page for secondary access.

Good navigation enhances user experience (UX) and plays a critical role in usability and accessibility.
