Negative Space

Definition of "Negative Space" by Graphic Design Newcastle:

Negative Space refers to the empty or unoccupied areas around and between the subjects or elements in a design or composition. It is also known as "white space," though it doesn't necessarily have to be white—it can be any color, texture, or background.

In graphic design, negative space is used intentionally to:

  • Create balance and visual clarity
  • Emphasize the main subject (positive space)
  • Enhance readability and legibility
  • Form hidden or secondary images (as seen in logos like FedEx or the WWF panda)

Effective use of negative space can make a design more aesthetically pleasing, easier to understand, and more impactful.
