Definition of "Uppercase" by Graphic Design Newcastle:

Uppercase refers to the larger form of letters in the alphabet, commonly known as capital letters. These are used at the beginning of sentences, for proper nouns, acronyms, and for emphasis in typography and design. In graphic design and typesetting, uppercase letters are often used for headings, logos, and to create visual hierarchy or impact.

Examples of uppercase letters:

  • A, B, C, D, E, F, G...

The term originates from traditional typesetting, where capital letters were stored in the "upper case" of a type drawer, while lowercase letters were stored in the "lower case."
